Clark Tower

This limestone monument stands twenty-five feet high and was built by the sons of Caleb and Ruth Clark to honor their legacy. The Clarks were among the first pioneer settlers in Madison County, arriving in May 1846. Work on the tower  started in March 1926 and was completed in July of the same year. The stone used to build the tower was quarried on the bluff in City Park within about a 200-foot radius of the tower. Clark Tower was presented to the City of Winterset by Earl Clark, a grandson of Caleb and Ruth Clark, in August 1926. Three of the Clarks’ daughters were also present for the dedication.

Today, visitors flock to this hidden gem which they refer to as our "castle." Clark Tower is located within City Park and can be accessed by foot, bicycle, or vehicle (nothing larger than a minivan). It is one mile up and one mile down along a one-way, narrow dirt road. Visitors may climb the two stories of the tower to the top for a view of the Middle River Valley.
